Introduction

Whenever people talk about a Malaysia famous cartoon, the same names always come up: Upin & Ipin, Ejen Ali, maybe even Kampung Boy. These shows defined Malaysian animation for years.

But as the writer of Kisah Bawah Tanah, I wanted to create something different — a funny cartoon that wasn’t just for kids, but also for teens and families who still love our ghost stories.

That’s how this new Malaysian animated series was born. And yes, I’m thrilled to finally say — it’s coming at the end of 2025, with 26 episodes (11 minutes each). The streaming platform will be announced soon.

What Kisah Bawah Tanah Is All About

Kisah Bawah Tanah (English title: Tales Down Below) is a comedy cartoon set in a supernatural town called Down Below.

It follows Zack and Sam, two teenage skeleton best friends who only want to play games and read comics. Instead, they get stuck working at The Mart, a convenience store run by Tok Mart, their overbearing zombie boss.

But here’s the twist — The Mart hides a portal to other dimensions. That portal pulls Zack and Sam into wild adventures, where they meet creatures from Malaysian folklore like the Pontianak, Toyol, Penanggal, and Orang Bunian, as well as myths from around the world.

It’s not horror. It’s a funny cartoon with supernatural chaos, workplace humor, and coming-of-age struggles. Think of it as a Malaysian animated series that mixes cultural legends with everyday teen problems.

Why We Created Kisah Bawah Tanah

When we think of a Malaysia famous cartoon, most are made for kids. That’s great, but we wanted to try something new.

Every Malaysian child grows up hearing ghost tales — “don’t whistle at night,” “beware the Toyol,” “don’t go near the banana tree.” Instead of treating them only as scary stories, we asked: why not make them fun, adventurous, and satirical?

That’s why this project came together through Animasia Studio, Spaceboy Studio, and Komet Production (consultation). We wanted a comedy cartoon that could:

  • Celebrate Malaysian ghost stories.

  • Appeal to teenagers, young adults, and families.

  • Travel globally while still being uniquely Malaysian.

Standing Among Malaysia Famous Cartoons

Malaysia already has global hits:

  • Upin Ipin — a cultural phenomenon.

  • Ejen Ali — a sleek, action-packed Malaysian animated series.

  • Bola Kampung — mixing sports and kampung humor.

Kisah Bawah Tanah now steps in with something fresh: a funny cartoon rooted in folklore, powered by fast-paced comedy, and designed for a PG-13 audience.

What Makes It Stand Out

Here’s why we believe Kisah Bawah Tanah deserves to be called a future Malaysia famous cartoon:

  1. PG-13 tone — finally, a middle ground between kiddie shows and adult humor.

  2. Supernatural workplace setting — unique in Malaysian animation.

  3. Folklore-driven storytelling — showcasing Pontianak, Toyol, and more.

  4. Comedy focus — at its heart, it’s a funny cartoon about friendship.

  5. Flexible format — 26 × 11-minute episodes built for streaming.

Looking Ahead

Ina, one of the main characters in Kisah Bawah Tanah, flashes a cheeky smile at a mysterious figure — a moment that captures the charm of this Malaysia famous cartoon, blending supernatural fun into a PG-13 comedy cartoon.

We’re aiming to release by end of 2025. The streaming platform announcement is coming soon, but what excites me most is how Kisah Bawah Tanah will introduce our folklore to a global stage.

If Upin Ipin defined family values and Ejen Ali showcased action, then Kisah Bawah Tanah is the comedy cartoon that puts our urban legends front and center — in a way that’s fun, modern, and relatable.

Conclusion

As the writer and a team member of Kisah Bawah Tanah, I truly believe Kisah Bawah Tanah has the chance to stand proudly as the next Malaysia famous cartoon.

It’s a Malaysian animated series about friendship, growing up, and all the bizarre moments that come with it — told through folklore, comedy, and the wild adventures of Zack and Sam.

By the end of this year, you’ll finally get to see it for yourself. And hopefully, Kisah Bawah Tanah will earn its place beside the cartoons that made Malaysia proud.
